A top-order left-hand batsman and part-time medium pacer from Barbados, Jonathan Carter was an unremarkable presence in the West Indies domestic circuit in the early years of his career. An inability to convert promising starts into more substantial scores hampered his progress as a batsman.

Things began to turn in 2013 when he notched up his maiden first-class century, for Barbados against Windward Islands, in a match where the second-highest individual score was 27. He scored his first List A ton later that year - a swashbuckling 133 off 132 on an A tour of India. This was followed by another List A ton early in 2014 and a maiden T20 century in the Champions League T20 in India that year.

As Carter's batting started yielding greater dividends, he also developed into a useful medium-pace bowler. His increasingly consistent performances at the domestic level caught the eye of the West Indies selectors and earned him a place in the ODI squad for South Africa in January 2015. Despite a quiet series, he was retained for the World Cup in Australia and New Zealand, but failed to make an impact. After a string of single-digit scores in an ODI series in Sri Lanka that November, he was dropped from the team.

Carter was a member of the Barbados Tridents team that made it to the final of the Caribbean Premier League in 2015, but his own returns were unimpressive - 94 runs in nine innings, with a top score of 25.
