Matthew Wood started his Yorkshire career with a flourish, scoring 1000 runs in his first full season, 1998. A former England Under-19 player, Wood did not live up to this promise, although he was selected for the National Academy in 2001-02 and was voted the Club Player-of-the-Year and his team-mates Player-of-the-Year in 2003 when he scored 1423 runs in the Championship. He was an ever-present in 2005 when Yorkshire won promotion to the first division, but 2006 was a miserable year for Wood as he played just six times in the Championship and failed to reach 200 runs. After failing to find a first-team place in 2007 he was released before the end of the season. He was snapped up by Glamorgan but failed to break into the four-day side, and despite some reasonable one-day innings, he retired early in 2009 with a year of his contract to run.
