Jamie Harrison is a left-arm seamer who was born on Merseyside but moved to Cumbria as a child and attended Sedbergh School, which numbers former England rugby union captains John Spencer and Will Carling among its old boys, along with rugby union World Cup winner Will Greenwood. He is among several Durham cricketers recruited from Cumbria.

Harrison made his Second XI debut as an 18-year-old in April 2009 and was given his senior debut against Somerset in a Clydesdale Bank 40 match at Chester-le-Street in May 2012, claiming the wicket of Craig Kieswetter with his fourth delivery. He made his LV= Championship debut against the same opposition in Taunton the following week, dismissing Arul Suppiah with his ninth ball and going on to finish with 4 for 112 from 22 overs.

He played in three further matches, two in the Championship, before a stress fracture of the shin ended his season early. Throughout the winter, he was in the swimming pool early in the morning and last thing at night as he fought to regain fitness. His first Championship appearance in 2013 was delayed until late August, but he took his first five-wicket haul as he mopped up Surrey's tail at Chester-le-Street: he disposed of Surrey's last three batsmen, two lbw and finally scattering Jade Dernbach's stumps, without conceding a run. A serious knee injury brought further frustration over the next two seasons.
