Paul Coughlin's journey as a highly talented allrounder has been repeatedly disrupted by injury but he has nevertheless proven himself as another success story for Durham's academy during two spells at the club. Coughlin had been made captain of the T20 side and was on the fringes of England Lions selection when he agreed a switch to Nottinghamshire at the end of the 2017 season - a move that led Durham's president, Sir Ian Botham, to call for greater levels of compensation for players developed by counties who then plied their trade elsewhere.

Nottinghamshire were confident that, at 24, they had secured a dynamic all-round cricketer in Coughlin, who had topped Durham's T20 batting averages with 333 runs at 41.62 while taking 13 wickets at 24.84. Proof of his blossoming reputation came with an immediate call-up for a Lions training camp in Australia, and he made his debut in the Caribbean shortly after - but a dislocated shoulder suffered on tour hampered his start at Notts and he only managed 10 appearances across two seasons before agreeing a return to the northeast.

Back at Durham, he made a career-best 90 in the Bob Willis Trophy, adding a maiden hundred in 2022 during a club record unbroken eighth-wicket stand of 213 with Ben Raine against Worcestershire. Injuries continued to hold him back but he played his part in the following summer's promotion-winning campaign, averaging 54.33 in six Championship appearances to go with 12 wickets.

Coughlin, born on Wearside, saw the early stages of his career blighted by back problems. He progressed through the Durham academy to make his first-class debut aged 19 against Australia A, but a stress fracture of the back entailed no 1st XI cricket the following season. When his Championship debut finally came in 2014, though, he certainly made his mark, an innings of 85 against Lancashire representing the highest score at the time by a Durham No. 10. In 2015, he helped to turn a Championship game against Somerset on its head, following his second Championship half-century with career-best figures of 4 for 10.

Durham showed how highly they regarded him when he was named captain against Sri Lanka A in his first first-class appearance of the 2016 season. Coughlin's brother Josh, an England Under-19, made his senior debut in the same match. Caution over his fitness led to Paul playing as a specialist batsman in late season for the 2nd XI and his 231 - the second highest for the county at that level - helped them to the Second XI Championship.
