Wisden Overview
A defensive opening batsman, John Rutherford was the first Western Australian to be selected for a major tour and the first to be capped when he was included in the Australian side which visited England, India, and Pakistan in 1956. His inclusion owed much to his hundred in the Test trial at Sydney, batting despite suffering injuries in a car accident shortly before the match. On the tour he played only one Test, making 30 and taking 1 for 15 with his occasional legbreaks.
