James Weighell played a prominent role in a historic Durham performance in 2018 when they won a match after following on for the first time since their admission to the Championship in 1992. Weighell warmed up with 38 with the bat to leave Leicestershire a target of 148 runs to win from 46 overs, just enough for Durham's bowlers to sense they were in with a sniff. Weighell then took a first-class best of 7 for 32 to bowl Leicestershire out for 101.

Another of Durham's promising Academy seam bowlers, Weighell hails from Middlesbrough, border country where Durham's raids have become considerably more successful than Yorkshire's, and might have made quicker progress had his career not been hampered by back trouble. He was actually released by Durham in 2014, but regained fitness playing for Northumberland to win another chance.

In 2016, he took his maiden five-for against Warwickshire at Edgbaston, returning match figures of 9 for 130 when his reliance on bowling brisk right-arm predominantly from around the wicket raised a few eyebrows. He was a regular member of the Durham T20 side that reached the quarter-finals in 2018, and built a solid record in first-class cricket - although injuries continued to put a check on his progress.
