4.35 pm: New Zealand make it two for two as they continue their march through the group stages, despite stumbling the last few steps. Scotland, on the other hand, can take a bow after showing character with both bat and ball. We sincerely hope you enjoyed our coverage of today's match. Don't forget to tune in tomorrow as we have Afghanistan and Bangladesh set to begin their respective World Cup campaigns. That game will be live from Canberra at 2.30 pm local time. Don't forget to also tune in for Match Point which is running live on our homepage. Till the next time though, this is Rohan Sharma signing off on behalf of ESPNcricinfo, wishing you all a good night, and good luck!

Brendon McCullum, New Zealand captain: Credit to them to posting a good total that was tricky on this kind of surface. Pleased with the result in the end, but we definitely showed nerves towards the end. We will take the result, and points from the game. They are world-class bowlers (Boult, Southee), and they have stood up for a long time in Test cricket for us. It is outstanding when you are able to win the toss, choose to bowl, and then be backed up. Really good performance with the ball and in the field, but we need to improve on our batting. It should be a great challenge when we play the next one as the surfaces and conditions will also change. We are going to have to play incredibly well. This is certainly the strongest side I have ever played in.

Preston Mommsen, Scotland captain: Tough start for us as we were unfortunate to lose a few early ones, but credit to Machan and Richie for batting through that difficult period. It showed that when we put the ball in the right areas we got our rewards. We are very proud of the fight we put up and the character these boys have shown. We are not shy of the fact that we are a very inexperienced team in World Cups. Glad to get this first one out of the way, and now we are ready for England.

4.25 pm: Don't go anywhere just yet folks as we do expect more quotes from the captains in a little bit, plus a live showing of Match Point soon after that.

Trent Boult, Man of the Match: It felt pretty good. I thought the ball came out relatively nicely, plus the wicket assisted a bit too. Everyone contributed and we got the job done in the end. It did swing for a bit longer than expected, plus the pace was there. Glad things fell into place though. Really enjoying my form with the white ball, and I continue to hope to make the most of the opportunities that come my way.

The Man of the Match is Trent Boult for his 2 for 21 in six overs.

4.20 pm: New Zealand make it through in the end, but you can hardly call this one a convincing victory, as they pull through by three wickets. Scotland did remarkably well to keep this chase interesting, despite the lower than par score they had fronted initially. Can't really speak of any specific New Zealand batsmen who stood out, other than Kane who top-scored with 38. Iain Wardlaw and John Davey were the pick of the Scottish bowlers, picking up three apiece.

4
Wardlaw to Vettori, FOUR runs

and probably the most appropriate manner for this match to end as Vettori gets away a streaky edge which he had no clue about through the slip region as he looked to slam this shorter length out of Dunedin. This one slices over the slips to continue through to the boundary

24.4
1
Wardlaw to Milne, 1 run

and he levels the scores with a deft glide through third man, much to the relief of the University Oval crowd

24.3
Wardlaw to Milne, no run

driven straight to mid-off as they search for the tying run

NZ two away now...

this time gets away Wardlaw through square-leg as he shuffles over a touch to make the shot possible

24.1
2
Wardlaw to Vettori, 2 runs

Vettori trying to target the cow corner boundary, but ends up hitting more towards midwicket as this one is tracked back by the fielder in the deep

NZ need five for victory, but have just the three wickets in hand. Surely that should be enough?

NZ 137 for 7 as Adam Milne makes his way to the middle. Vettori on strike as NZ are within a blow of winning this

W
Davey to Ronchi, OUT

now Ronchi has to go as NZ are really making a shambles of this chase. Looking to get away as many hits as possible now to finish the game, but his aggressiveness spells his demise as he slams a high, straightforward catch to deep midwicket, who is able to take it quite comfortably in the end

Davey to Ronchi, FOUR runs

Ronchi not concerned about the previous dismissal as he flicks this fuller length over cow corner, with this just beating the boundary rider coming in from deep midwicket

NZ 133 for 6 as they look to knock off the final 10. Will another wicket fall in the process though? Daniel Vettori is the new batsman

23.2
W
Davey to Anderson, OUT

and Wardlaw redeems himself after his earlier blunder at fine leg to remove the dangerous Corey Anderson, who top-edges this attempted flick through fine leg, with this one going higher than farther. Able to run to his right and take the catch in the end
