Records for FC Matches

Notes: The number of balls taken to achieve fifties was rarely recorded until recently. C. I. J. Smith's two fifties (above) may have taken only 12 balls each. Khalid Mahmood reached his fifty in 15 balls. Fifties scored in contrived circumstances and with the bowlers' compliance are excluded from the above list, including the fastest of them all, in 8 minutes (13 balls) by C. C. Inman, Leicestershire v Nottinghamshire at Nottingham, 1965, and 10 minutes by G. Chapple, Lancashire v Glamorgan at Manchester, 1993.
Fastest hundreds - in minutes
Notes: The fastest recorded authentic hundred in terms of balls received was scored off 34 balls by D. W. Hookes (above).
Research of the score book has shown that PGH Fender scored his hundred from between 40 and 46 balls. He contributed 113 to an unfinished sixth-wicket partnership of 171 in 42 minutes with HA Peach.
EB Alletson (Nottinghamshire) scored 189 out of 227 runs in 90 minutes against Sussex at Hove in 1911. It has been estimated that his last 139 runs took 37 minutes. The following fast hundreds were scored in contrived circumstances when full tosses, long hops etc were bowled deliberately to expedite a declaration: G Chapple (21 minutes), Lancashire v Glamorgan at Manchester, 1993; TM Moody (26 minutes), Warwickshire v Glamorgan at Swansea, 1990; SJ O'Shaughnessy (35 minutes), Lancashire v Leicestershire at Manchester, 1983; CM Old (37 minutes), Yorkshire v Warwickshire at Birmingham, 1977; NFM Popplewell (41 minutes), Somerset v Gloucestershire at Bath, 1983; MW Goodwin (25 minutes), Sussex v Middlesex, 2006, ML Pettini (24 minutes), Essex v Leicestershire, 2006.
