†AUSTRALIA v WEST INDIES 1986-87

At Adelaide, January 25

15-Apr-1988
At Adelaide, January 25. West Indies won by 16 runs. Although without two of their most experienced players, Greenidge and Holding, both having strained hamstring muscles, West Indies won more comfortably than the final margin suggested. Gomes, in his first match of the competition, helped Richardson add 92 in an innings without a boundary, and when he was bowled in the 30th over, Richardson (134 balls, three fours) and Richards (64 balls, two sixes, seven fours) put on 74 in eleven overs. Marsh gave the Australian innings a solid base but lacked the power to dominate the closing overs; he was caught in the deep for 94 from 137 balls, having hit a six and three fours. The loss of Jones in the 27th over and Border in the 28th were setbacks from which Australia, who had decided to bat second, did not recover.
Man of the Match: G. R. Marsh. Attendance: 23,908.
