Meyrick Pringle takes four for few against West Indies

Pringle, with his mop of shoulder-length hair, would have looked more at home in a rock band than a cricket team. His international career was a limited affair, but for one day in Christchurch he had West Indies' best dancing to his tune. South Africa had shown commendable spirit since their return from isolation and had already beaten Australia in the tournament. West Indies, though, were still a formidable outfit, especially their batting line-up.

But a target of 201 was stiffer than it appeared; the pitches in New Zealand for the World Cup were slow, low affairs that befuddled numerous teams. However, there was nothing slow about West Indies' collapse. Pringle ripped out Brian Lara, Richie Richardson, Carl Hooper and Keith Arthurton to leave them reeling at 19 for 4. Lara went with the total on 10, taken at point by Jonty Rhodes (who was another success story from this World Cup), then Pringle's swing did for the next three with the scoreboard stuck on 19.

That was the end of Pringle's success with the ball, but he still had one vital role to play, taking a catch to remove Gus Logie, which virtually sealed the result for South Africa. This was just Pringle's second ODI. He'd play only 15 more, spread over four years, adding just another 18 wickets. But he'd always have Christchurch.
