Matt Dixon, from Perth, played for Western Australia at both Under-17 and Under-19 level and went on to win Under-19 honours for Australia in five ODIs. He subsequently made his List A debut for Western Australia against Victoria in 2010, made his first-class debut against New South Wales in March 2011 and represented Perth Scorchers in the Big Bash.

Blessed with a British passport, Dixon joined Essex in 2016 and expressed the ambition to "play for them for 10 or 15 years if my body holds up." He made his Essex debut against Cambridge MCCU at Fenner's prior to the 2016 season, but his body did not hold up often enough and he was released at the end of the 2018 season.
