Scotland Men's Cricket Team History

Cricket in Scotland has deep roots. Its oldest club, Kelso CC, was founded in 1821, while the names of illustrious visitors such as WG Grace, Wilfred Rhodes and Don Bradman (whose last innings on British soil came at Aberdeen in 1948) feature in any potted history. But it was not until the 1990s that Scottish cricket attempted to exert any form of national identity, first by severing ties with England and then by applying for ICC membership. Scotland qualified for the ODI World Cup at the first attempt, finishing third at the 1997 ICC Trophy in Malaysia. Their first official ODI was the Group B opener at the 1999 World Cup against Australia. As part of England hosting the tournament, two of Scotland's games were held at the Grange Club in Edinburgh - scene of a narrow, 22-run defeat against Bangladesh (at the time still an Associate nation). Scotland's star player, Gavin Hamilton, was promptly poached to play Test cricket for England.

Scotland missed out on qualification for the 2003 World Cup but demonstrated the strength of their playing pool by winning the inaugural ICC Intercontinental Cup the following year and then beating Ireland to lift the ICC Trophy in 2005. A team featuring Hamilton, Dougie Brown (who played nine ODIs for England), John Blain, Craig Wright and Majid Haq went to the 2007 World Cup with hopes of causing an upset, only to suffer three heavy losses.

Appearances at the 2007 and 2009 World T20s were followed by a six-year wait to again feature on the biggest stage. Scotland came close to breaking their winless run at World Cups, dramatically succumbing to Afghanistan by one wicket in Dunedin at the 2015 ODI World Cup, before finally doing so at the 21st attempt, against Hong Kong at the 2016 World T20. Bigger scalps were to follow, with wins over Bangladesh at the 2021 edition and West Indies in 2022.
