Bob Herman was a right-arm fast medium bowler and right-handed lower order batsman who played for Middlesex and then, with greater success for Hampshire, as well as enjoying two winters in South Africa. He forced himself into the Middlesex side in 1967 but was dropped despite winning his cap in 1969 and struggled to regain a regular slot in the side. He switched to Hampshire in 1972 and made an immediate impression, taking 81 wickets at 21.66 and followed with 64 at 25.32 and 73 at 19.53 in the following years. But he once again found himself increasingly on the sidelines. He played for Dorset for a couple of seasons and then became a first-class umpire from 1979 to 1982 (where he was on the list with his father for three years) before taking up a teaching post.
