A slingy fast bowler, Barnes would have achieved a lot had he been born a generation later, but as it was his best performances came in the Howa Bowl, the non-white equivalent of the Currie Cup, where he took 287 wickets at 11.32. By the time the two factions united after the dismantling of apartheid, he was past his best, but he did make a handful of appearances for Western Province. He moved into coaching and eventually became that assistant coach to the national team.
